UNUSUAL

it is unusual

i put this out for you because you

came tapping at the window weeks ago

you finished a whole one

then, like that faker,

the sun

you disappeared a week ago

and i have not seen you since.

where did you go, needle-beaked

red-headed emerald friend?

was it something i said?

The hummingbirds that visit me are skittish like that too. I haven't had their water out for weeks and they haven't come around. But then, yesterday, one practically dive-bombed me when I was on my patio. I'd better get my feeder filled up again.

Four parts boiled water to one part sugar! No red dye! Cheaper! Healthier! (Did you know that I was a Certified Backyard Birdfeeding Specialist? For reals!)

Love this shot and the following poem! I need to get my feeder up again as well. But Anna, how do you keep the ants from attacking it?

Pixie: make sure when you submit at Mama Says Om, you post a static link (like http://pinkcoyote.blogspot.com/2006/04/unusual.html) and not just a link to your main url. That way we can easily find your entry. Thanks so much for contributing!

Hola Elaine, it is I, your friendly neighborhood birdfeeding guru.

The water/sugar formula is the same basic stuff as flower nectar. You just put it into a feeder as you normally would. A good hummingbird feeder has small feeding ports and no yellow on it~ yellow attracts bees. They may find it anyhow, but they find it more quickly when there are yellow flowers on it. As for ants, you can get a little cup that hooks on above the feeder. You fill the cup with water and that keeps the ants from getting to the feeder. Voila! Also, make sure to clean the feeder throughly~ mold grows quickly in the summer and it can make the hummingbirds very sick. And only fill the feeder with as much nectar as they're eating in a day's time- that way it doesn't go bad. You can make a big batch and keep it in the fridge and just add a little each day.
Happy birding! :)
